Reinhardtius hippoglossoides – Known under the names Greenland halibut, black halibut and mock halibut. It is found basically at depths of between 200 and 2000 metres. In arctic and temperate waters; northern hemisphere. For this specie caught in the north west Atlantic, we use the name Greenland halibut. It spawns in the northern parts of the continental shelf, from the Vesterålen Archipelago up to the island of Bjørnøya.

The fishing for Greenland halibut mainly takes place along the edge of the continental shelf as far north as the Island of Prince Karls Forland. Commercial fishing is however strictly regulated in an attempt to increase the Norwegian stock.

Other catch areas are the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and in Greenland waters. Greenland halibut is an oily fish and is mostly sold to be smoked and sliced. It can be fried, steamed or boiled and is used in a variety of dishes.

The content of fat and also omega-3 fatty acids varies according to season and diet , but is always plenty. It is also a great source of vitamin D.
